Bhakti Is Fulfilled Not by Words, but by Self-Transformation, Sewa, and Surrender

MAY 2026 SATSANG BY PARAM SANT HUZUR KANWAR SAHEB JI MAHARAJ

Satsang is not meant only for fulfilling the needs of the body; its true purpose is the upliftment of the soul and the improvement of one’s life. Every living being works to take care of the body, but human life becomes meaningful only when a person focuses on spiritual growth, remembrance of God, and the correction of their Karmas. From time to time, a person should reflect on their own life and see how much impact Satsang has had on their thoughts, behaviour, and nature.

A true Satsangi is one who develops qualities such as kindness, love, humility, Sewa, and compassion. Such a person serves parents, elders, the poor, and those who are suffering. If there is no love, patience, or spirit of Sewa within someone, then merely sitting in Satsang does not make them a true Satsangi. The real meaning of Satsang is to rise above negative qualities and fill life with goodness and virtue.

A person’s devotion and values are reflected through their behaviour. The purpose of Satsang is to bring transformation within a person. Simply listening to spiritual talks, repeating God’s name, or putting on an outer show is not true devotion. Real devotion begins when a person recognizes their faults and sincerely tries to overcome them.

The role of the Guru is to guide, explain, and inspire people to improve their lives. If a person follows the teachings of the Guru, their life will naturally change; otherwise, they alone are responsible for their Karma’s. Today, many people speak of devotion but do not give up their bad habits, and because of this, the true image of Satsang and bhakti is often misunderstood in society. A true devotee does not seek honour, status, or selfish gain, but values Sewa, surrender, and humility. One who does not understand Sewa can never truly understand devotion.

A devotee experiences the presence of God and the Guru in every moment of life. In their heart, devotion holds a higher place than worldly attractions. The greed, fear, and temptations of the world constantly try to pull a person away from the spiritual path, and difficulties are a part of life. But a true devotee never loses faith, even in hard times.

A person should understand that happiness and sorrow, profit and loss, life and death are all connected to one’s Karma’s. Earning wealth through wrong means, cheating others, taking away someone’s rights, or living dishonestly eventually leads only to pain and destruction. On the other hand, a person who lives with honesty, hard work, and truth can remain peaceful and content even with limited means.

Devotion is not limited to rituals, prayers, or sitting in meditation for a short time. True devotion is purity of mind, obedience to the Satguru’s teachings, and constant remembrance of God. When a person becomes gentle in behaviour, treats everyone with love, and influences others through good qualities, their life begins to inspire society as well.

Good actions bring respect, love, and honor, while wrong actions bring disrespect and sorrow. Therefore, simply attending Satsang is not enough; real change must come into one’s life. The grace of the Satguru remains upon the one who walks according to His teachings and dedicates life to truth, love, and selfless Sewa. This is true meditation, true devotion, and the real essence of Satsang.
