The Guru’s Word: The Fort That Protects the Soul

Saints have always reminded us that human life is rare and precious. This body is not received again and again. We do not know what form the soul may receive in the future. That is why, while we have this human birth, we must use it wisely and not waste it only in worldly comforts.

Human life has not been given merely for eating, sleeping, earning, and enjoying the world. The special purpose of human life is to remember God, follow the path of devotion, and free the soul from the cycle of birth and death. The greatest suffering of the soul is repeated birth and death, and the only true remedy for it is devotion to the Lord’s Name.

God is the true friend of those who have a truthful heart. He does not support falsehood, dishonesty, and deceit. But if even a sinner repents sincerely and begins to walk on the path of truth, God accepts him. Wherever there is truth, God’s grace is present.

Guru Nanak Sahib warned that this body will one day return to dust. Yet man spends his whole life arranging food, clothes, comfort, and pleasures for this body. These desires please the mind for a short time, but they bind the soul in karma. True devotion is selfless. If devotion is done for personal gain, reward, or worldly benefit, it is not pure devotion.

On the path of Bhakti, Sewa, Guru bhakti, and Naam bhakti have great importance. Through Sewa, the mind becomes humble. Through Guru bhakti, faith becomes firm. Guru bhakti means obeying the Guru’s words, living within His command, and trusting His guidance completely. One who begins to doubt the Guru’s words slowly moves away from the path. The Guru’s word protects the disciple like a strong fort. Therefore, one should never step outside the discipline and maryada given by the Guru.

A true seeker must also live with discipline. Too much food, too much sleep, laziness, and slavery to the senses become obstacles in devotion. Food, rest, and sleep should be taken only as needed. Excess of anything is harmful.

Speech also has great power. One word can give peace, and one word can cause deep pain. One word can free a person from sorrow, and one word can create bondage. Therefore, we should speak only after thinking carefully. Before opening our mouth, we should ask ourselves whether our words will hurt someone. Our speech should be sweet, truthful, and within limits.

Whatever is inside a person’s heart comes out through his words. A noble person speaks words that are soothing like nectar, while a negative person speaks words that hurt like burning coals. A good person should become like sandalwood. Even the axe that cuts sandalwood becomes fragrant. In the same way, a noble person should respond to evil with goodness.

Evil cannot be removed by evil, just as mud cannot be cleaned with mud. If we want to remove negativity, we must choose goodness. It may be difficult to change a wicked person, because his mind is under the influence of ego and ignorance. Still, those who receive the Lord’s grace learn to tolerate harshness and turn even bitterness into goodness.

Therefore, one should not answer a wicked, sinful, or ignorant person with harsh words. Such replies only increase conflict. A heart in which God resides does not move towards evil. The remembrance of God, the Guru’s word, truthful conduct, and sweet speech are the true means to make human life successful.
