From the Mind’s Bondage to the Soul’s Freedom

Bhadra Satsang 2026 By Param Sant Huzur Kanwar Saheb Ji Maharaj

Every word of satsang carries spiritual power, which is earned through faith and practice by the Satguru. Naam is the unseen divine force that transforms us from within, and its effect begins with faith in the mind. If the mind is controlled, devotion becomes complete. The same mind that can lead us to God usually keeps us trapped in the world. We follow what it likes and avoid what it dislikes. It runs away from prayer but happily moves towards worldly pleasures because it has become used to them.

The Kaal wants the soul to remain tied to desire, attachment and worldly attractions. If we turn the mind away from the world and towards the Lord, our true purpose can be fulfilled. That purpose is not merely to follow customs and perform worldly duties; it is to become free from the cycle of birth and death. Satguru gives us Naam and shows this path.

Devotion cannot be practised according to our own wishes. We may receive Naam, but if we ignore the Guru’s instructions, we remain followers of the mind. A manmukh lives according to the mind; a gurumukh lives according to the Guru. Our spiritual journey truly begins when we accept the Guru’s guidance.

Changing the mind is difficult. Alcohol, drugs, gambling and other bad habits can destroy health, wealth, relationships and respect, yet a person may still be unable to stop.  A true warrior is one who controls the mind instead of being controlled by it.

The mind does not become pure merely by reading scriptures, discussing religion or attending satsang. Knowledge is useful only when it changes our conduct. A person may speak beautifully about devotion and still remain controlled by anger, greed and ego. Spiritual progress is measured not by what we know, but by how faithfully we live the Guru’s teachings.

The Guru asks us to practise Naam, control our desires, speak kindly, earn honestly and serve others. If we select only the instructions that suit us, we are still following the mind. True surrender means trusting the Guru even when the mind resists. Every act of obedience weakens the ego and strengthens faith.

Worldly education has a limit. It can sharpen the intellect and help us succeed, but it cannot by itself give inner peace or freedom from birth and death. Spiritual wisdom is earned through humility, Simran and direct experience. The proud person believes, “I know everything,” whereas a true saint says, “The Lord alone knows; I am under His command.” Truth is revealed through humility and a transformed life. In difficulties, remain steady and trust the Guru.

The company of saints quietly changes us, just as fire gives heat and water gives coolness. We absorb purity in satsang. Even without full attention, time spent there is not wasted; satsang helps us in unseen ways.

Our greatest enemies live within us: lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego. They wait for a weak moment and pull the mind away from the path. The Guru therefore teaches Naam Simran. If we cannot sit for long, we can remember Naam for short periods throughout the day. Simran is not limited to one posture; it can continue while walking, working, eating or resting.

Some seekers complain that they do not see inner light or hear the Sound. We should not demand or imagine a particular experience. Our duty is to practise Simran with love and concentration. When the mind becomes pure and attention goes deep within, spiritual experiences arise naturally.

Naam cleans the mind as soap removes stains from cloth. Regular Simran weakens old habits, sins and negative thoughts. Discipline and repeated practice gradually make the restless mind fit for spiritual progress.

The five inner enemies—lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego—bind the soul to the world. Lust disturbs judgement, anger destroys peace, greed makes enough seem insufficient, attachment creates fear of loss, and ego prevents us from accepting our faults. These enemies become strong when we repeatedly feed them through thoughts and actions.

The mind cannot be emptied by force. It must be given a higher direction. If we only suppress worldly desires, they may return more strongly. When the mind begins to taste the peace of Naam, lower attractions gradually lose their hold. This is why Simran must become part of everyday life rather than an occasional activity.

Watch your mind without obeying its every thought. Before speaking or acting, pause and ask: Is this honest? Is it kind? Does it agree with the Guru’s teaching? Such awareness prevents many wrong actions. If a mistake occurs, accept it, seek forgiveness and correct it instead of defending it.

Never hurt anyone through words, actions or behaviour. A harsh sentence may remain in another person’s heart for years. The pain we cause eventually returns through the law of karma. A compassionate heart understands another person’s suffering and chooses kindness even when no reward is expected.

True detachment does not mean abandoning family, work, food or normal life. It means fulfilling every duty while keeping the heart connected to God. Real detachment comes when the mind finds greater joy in devotion and naturally rises above lower attractions.

Naam needs no money or special place. It can be remembered anywhere. We do not remember the debts of past lives, but the Guru gives Naam as the medicine that cleanses them. Life is uncertain, so devotion should not be postponed.

The story of Bhishma Pitamah teaches us to act carefully. In a previous birth, he moved a snake from the road and threw it into thorny bushes. The snake became trapped and died in pain. Bhishma later suffered on a bed of arrows. He had also remained silent in the royal court while Draupadi was humiliated. Wrongdoing is not limited to committing an evil act; silently watching injustice can also create karma.

Surat-Shabd Yoga means joining our attention with the inner Word or Sound. Outward rituals and pilgrimages cannot by themselves cleanse the mind. During meditation, do not force yourself to see a light or hear a sound. Gently withdraw the mind from outside thoughts and turn within. The inner experience comes naturally with deep concentration. It cannot be fully explained in books; it must be experienced.

Sahaj Yoga is a natural, balanced path. We fulfil family duties while practising devotion, without torturing the body or performing extreme austerities. With love, practice and the Guru’s grace, the soul rises step by step.

The Guru’s grace can transform a person in a moment. Without the Guru there is ignorance. When the Guru’s wisdom removes this darkness, the soul becomes fit to return to its true home.

Human birth is rare. Meeting a true Guru is even rarer, and receiving Naam and satsang is a precious blessing. One bound person cannot free another. Seek a perfect Guru who is free and can lead others to freedom. Remain grateful and pray that the Guru improves our actions, connects us with the Lord and carries us beyond worldly attachment.

Serving parents and parents-in-law with love is greater than travelling to distant pilgrimages. Help the poor, helpless and suffering through your body, mind and wealth. Money remains here after death, but the sincere blessing of someone you helped travels with you. A heartfelt blessing brings peace, while the curse earned by hurting someone can burn us from within.

Earn through honest and rightful means. Pure earnings encourage pure thoughts and positively influence children.
