Naam, Humility, and the Ultimate Goal of Life

Naam has immense power. All realms and universe rest upon Naam. Even great sinners and fallen souls have crossed over through Naam. But today people have turned Satsang and Naam into a drama. Those who do not even know what Naam truly is begin pretending to give it to others. Without the company of the true Guru, without learning the path properly, how can anyone understand its inner mysteries?

Reflect upon it, meditate on it, and keep that remembrance of Naam chant continuously within you . This is the main thing in Bhakti. If you remain in that Naam Simran, good words will naturally come from your mouth, and your thoughts will remain noble.

There are three states of our being: the waking state, the dream state, and deep sleep. In the waking state, we can meditate consciously. We can sit, remember the Naam, and withdraw our attention from all other things. Bringing the attention gently and naturally to the point between the two eyes—the seat of the soul. It is not attained easily, because people do not wish to sit, nor do they truly practice remembrance.

The entire creation is contained within the human body. Just as a small phone can contain news of the whole world, in the same way, the whole creation is hidden within us. But its layers can be opened only through the Guru’s grace and by following the path shown by the Guru.

The mantra given by the Guru should be practiced in solitude with complete concentration. One should withdraw the mind and attention from all directions and renounce all forms of imagination. Even if imagination arises while practicing in the waking state, the soul begins to perceive certain inner experiences.

Apart from the waking state, there are two other states of consciousness: the dream state and the state of deep sleep. Whatever actions and thoughts you have filled your life with in your waking state will appear again in the dream state. When dreams come, the same ideas and thoughts arise. The soul remembers those very things because those are the impressions that have been recorded within it.

Whenever the soul turns inward and enters within, it encounters only what has been stored in its inner record. The same thoughts, the same ideas, the same memories, and all the things that have been seen before begin to appear one by one, like scenes in a film unfolding before the mind.

The same process occurs even in the state of deep sleep. In that condition as well, the soul encounters the same impressions and inner states. After lot of years of practice, these worldly impressions would fade away and there will be a state when the same purity, bliss and steadiness will remain present in all three states—waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. It is then that you should understand that a person has become pure in mind, speech, and action (man, vachan, and karm).

To achieve this state, the main thing is to walk on the path of truth. The one who acts well outwardly, keeps pure thoughts within, and speaks sweetly, truthfully, and does not harm anyone is walking the true spiritual path. The one who knows this truth gains everything. But to attain the Spiritual Truth, a person must become truthful themselves. And to become truthful, Satsang is necessary. True Satsang is of the Satguru, and the Satguru teaches Satnam. When Satnam is attained, a person merges into truth itself and becomes inwardly awakened and satisfied.

The one who understands and achieves this secret while being alive—there is no doubt about his soul’s liberation.

Live as a householder if you wish; there is no problem in that. Your household life too will go well if your mind is peaceful. When you do no wrong to anyone, and even if others do wrong to you, you do not retaliate in the same way, because you know that karma will give its own result. Mud cannot be cleaned by mud. Evil cannot be removed by evil. A person must bear much in order to remain good.

But unless you are truthful at heart, your cleverness, deceit, and mental tricks will drown you. It is said: the one who hides deceit from the Guru and calls himself sincere—how can such a person be saved? One who uses deception and cleverness even with the Guru cannot be benefited by that path. Spiritual practice must be sincere. Hypocrisy and pride create obstacles. Pride is one of the greatest dangers on the spiritual path because it blinds a person to their own faults. Humility opens the door to spiritual growth. History shows that powerful kings disappeared, but humble saints are remembered forever. Human birth was given so that we may realize the Divine and return to the spiritual source from which we came. The path is simple: find a true Guru, learn from the Guru, attend Satsang, follow the Guru’s teachings, and live with sincerity. When a person walks on this path honestly, their life becomes peaceful and meaningful.

Finally, every person should make a resolution: whatever weaknesses exist within me, I will gradually remove them. People never forget their worldly duties, yet they often forget the remembrance of God. Instead of remembering God for only a few minutes each day, one should remember the Divine continuously—in every moment of life.Everything comes from the Divine, and ultimately everything returns to the Divine. Remain connected to the Divine always. Do not become separated from that connection, because the one who becomes separated from the Divine can never experience true peace.
